This is issues #15-19 of the ongoing series, but it feels like the first issue of the story. I wonder if I would have had a completely different experience if I had read the preceding issues because part of the joy of this book was the exploration of what was going on. I think much of this is because this book clearly has a very different turn of events to the usual comic. The lead character (and I assume the eponymous fem-fatale) starts the issue with amnesia. For long time readers I expect from the beginning you are screaming out telling her to get away, or move on, willing her to come to her senses and escape, but for me as a new reader it let me understand the effects around her at the same time that she does.
There is so much more to this story, the ongoing developments with who this ‘Jane Doe’ is; why she has such a profound effect on the men around her and why so many people are looking for her. The story jumps around in between three time frames, the present with the cleaner and the convict, the relatively near past with the bank robber and his band and the distant past as a deviant police officer meets an entrancing dark haired woman as a child and never manages to get her out of his head, no matter how many women his kills. The comic never confuses you with ‘when’ you are, it always seems clear that you have changed time and it brings everything together so well to tie up all three strands of time into the one story. I definitely got one ‘plot twist’ very early on, but as it turns out I was meant to get that one so that I would completely miss the ending that they had planned for me.
It has to be noted that this is about as far from an all ages book as you can get. People have their skulls caved in with a hammer and their corpses left on panel with no skull.
