Polarising Spiderman fans across the world, the Superior Spiderman is a bold step in the Spidey mythos.
The Amazing Spiderman is no more. In his place, with Peter Parker's mind replaced by Dr Otto Octavius, aka Doctor Octopus, is the all new, SUPERIOR Spiderman. It's Spidey's/Parker's body, Spidey's powers, but his mind replaced by his arch enemy, with Peter's mind dying inside Otto's real body.
Now Otto gets to live his life again, but in a fresh, younger body, with new powers and new ideals and values, as he realises that with great power comes great responsibility.
He fights crime, as Spidey always has, but in a different way than Peter ever did. He's more ruthless and doesn't play by the same rules that we're used to with Peter. He lashes out easily, almost killing villain Boomerang as he stops crimes committed by an all-new Sinister Six, and pummels the Vulture and his child minions to submission and actually does kill one villain in cold blood.
He upgrades his costume, and uses his genius intellect to create thousands of "eyes" to patrol the city for him, as he lets loose his Spiderbots to help his cause.
Unlike Peter, who would divert to rescue someone when already on task, Otto swings by burning buildings and instead calls the Fire Department to deal with it without breaking swing.
His new mannerisms are not going unnoticed. From MJ and his colleagues at Horizon Labs to the Avengers - they all cannot put their finger on quite what is wrong with Peter. Little do they know that it's not Peter anymore.
But Peter's mind is clawing its way back. An essence of his old self still resides within Otto's brain and is determined to reclaim its rightful place.
