Lazarus, the latest comic series by Greg Rucka and Michael Lark (their work together on Gotham Central is underrated and unappreciated I think), collects issues #1-4 and a special prologue segment. Lazarus is the tale of a futuristic dystopia where the world is mostly in ruin aside from select territories and locations where they are controlled by the most wealthy and powerful of people. These people are known as Family; powerful aristocrats similar to mob families in terms of control and ways of acting. Civilized working people who live and work under a Family are called Serfs and the poverty level people who do not live by the Family stronghold are called Waste. And every Family has one super soldier being, with strength, skills, and intelligence beyond peer, as well as the ability to heal from just about any mortal wound possible. These beings are called Lazarus.
Our main character, Forever Carlyle, or Eve for short, is a Lazarus for the Carlyle family. Eve is also the youngest sibling of the Carlyle family of 5 children under their father, the Family leader. The story that takes place involves another household breaking into Carlyle property and Eve investigating the incident and what might be done to fix it. All she really knows is that someone from her own family allowed the break in to happen, meaning a traitor is in the mist.
The actual plot is small for this first volume, but it is all about setting up the world and the characters who inhabit it, especially the Carlyle Family and Eve's dichotomy with her own family.
As always I know absolutely nothing about this book prior to receiving it; I often try to have a quick flick through of the titles as they come in before I file them away for later and this one really caught my eye. I have managed to restrain myself from doing any investigations into the title despite my interest and I am very glad I did because this comic feels like one big mystery. The comic starts out with a very cold opening as a young woman is brutally gunned down by three men. It is very strange as you read it because it becomes clear that contrary to what the page is showing, she is clearly alive and describing in graphic terms what is happening to her. Even to the point of her apparent death all she is doing is describing the mechanics of what her body is going through. The cold spoken explanation stops as she rises from the ground and for five graphic pages brutally takes her revenge.
The art in this comic is of a style that I generally do not like, it is scratchy and heavily inked with black being the shading rather than darker colour. But this art team deserve so much credit because even at a distance when the details become less defined you can see exactly who everyone is. A lot of thought has been put into the characters silhouettes so that with this heavy shading style you can pick them out even in a small crowded panel. It is masterfully done because this is not a superhero comic where every character can be immediately identified because of their garish costume colours; these people are wearing blacks, greys and whites in similar styles. There is barely any colour in the comic except for the mood lighting distinguishing different areas.
